Bicycle accidents aren’t rare. Brooklyn Bridge bike lane was especially dangerous for a cyclist who got injured in an accident last month. The injured cyclist, 64-year-old Carolea Goldfarb, received $75,000 on September 9th to settle a lawsuit claiming the city Department of Transportation made a huge risk of harm by not providing suitable protection to pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge.
Goldfarb, a retired Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney, was cycling to Manhattan from her office in downtown Brooklyn on the evening of Dec. 7, 2017. A man stepped in front of her in the bike lane on the western slope, causing the woman to crash.
The woman broke her right hand during her fall. Her injury required surgery and several months of physical therapy.
The bike and pedestrian lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge are divided by a thin white line.
Being a cyclist on the busy New York streets is stressful and risky. Cars aren’t the only danger, but also other cyclists and pedestrians.
Just like motorcyclists and pedestrians, cyclists have little to no protection and even a small impact can cause severe injuries that require longer treatment and recovery.
Being injured in this type of accident can change many things in your life. Besides having to deal with your injury, you’ll have to cover all the medical treatment fees, lost wages, and other expenses related to the injury. Let’s not forget the fact that a harsh injury can change the entire quality of life of the victim.
If you were injured in a bicycle accident in New York, you should consult a bicycle accident attorney. You have the right to file a lawsuit (no matter how the accident happened or whose fault it was). Your lawyer will evaluate your case and help you with further steps.
