Pizza Delivery Cyclist Dies in a Hit-and-Run Accident in Manhattan

Ernesto Guzman is at least the twentieth cyclist who lost his life on the city streets this year. He spent the last seven months delivering pizzas during the pandemic. In early November he was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Manhattan.

Forty-two-year-old Guzman was en route, delivering on his e-bike when an SUV driver hit him at Second Avenue and East 97th Street in East Harlem, the police informed.  The driver drove for another block downtown, got rid of the vehicle (registered to a Manhattan Uber base). The driver wasn’t driving for Uber when the accident happened.

The cyclist was transported to Metropolitan Hospital, but the doctors couldn’t save his life.

Bicycle accidents happen for many reasons, mainly because of speeding, negligent drivers who weren’t able to notice the cyclist. However, cyclists can also contribute to the accident by not following the road rules.

The injuries are harsh because the cyclist isn’t protected and even a small impact can lead to severe injuries. This happens when the person falls on the ground; this way some of the harshest fractures, head and spinal injuries occur.

Being injured in this type of accident can take long recovery and even in some cases, people may face life-time issues (reduced ability to work or enjoy life). If this is your case, make sure to seek legal help as soon as possible. The insurance company would try its best to offer a lower settlement. Of course, you shouldn’t accept it and let your attorney negotiate for the final amount.

This process may be overwhelming which is why we recommend you to get legal help from an attorney who has experience in the area. Our team at Cellino Law is here to help you and answer your questions. Need a case review for free? Our New York bicycle accident lawyers are here for you.
