A seventeen-year-old drunk driver killed a high-schooler in a Rockland County road crash early on Saturday, April 24. Dozens of saddened classmates were bringing flowers at the accident scene on Route 202 in Montebello, where sixteen-year-old Jacqueline Zangrilli was killed while riding in the backseat of the vehicle that crashed shortly before 3 a.m.
One of the other teenagers who survived the accident came to the accident scene with a bandaged arm in a cast. The investigators believe that speed was possibly a factor in the Rockland County road crash. The 2003 Jaguar sedan hit and split a utility pole in half before flipping on its side.
Zangrilli was a student at Suffern High School along with the other occupants in the car, three boys and another girl. Three of the other passengers were hospitalized after the accident, and are expected to fully recover. It wasn’t clear whether the teenagers were wearing seatbelts.
The underage driver was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter and DWI; he was later released to his parents. The police aren’t sure where or how he got the alcohol, but other people could end with charges as well.
The Suffern community were using the hashtag #suffernstrong and raised more than $100,000 for Zangrilli’s mother to pay for Jessica’s funeral, which is scheduled for Thursday.
Driving under the influence and speeding are two of the most lethal things that lead to severe accidents with fatal outcomes. Not wearing a seatbelt can significantly add to the harshness of the injuries.
