Three Long Island residents were involved and injured in a direct collision when one of the drivers crossed over into the other vehicle’s lane. According to Lt. Susan Ralph from the Southampton Police, the Long Island direct car crash happened around 2:27 p.m., on Monday, December 14, on Flanders Road in Southampton.

When the responding patrol units arrived on the scene, they found two vehicles in a head-on crash. They gave aid to seventy-seven-year-old Edward Sorensen, and fifty-seven-year-old Gearlyn O’Brien, both from Southampton. The third included person was twenty-five-year-old Jamel Mercer from Riverhead, the police said.

According to Ralph, Sorensen was operating a 2016 Subaru westbound with O’Brien, when he crashed with Mercer, who was operating a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, going eastbound. Mercer crossed over into Sorensen’s lane striking the Subaru, Ralph informed.

Sorensen and O’Brien were taken to Southampton Hospital. Mercer was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Southampton Police got assistance from the Southampton ambulance and fire departments and Hampton Bays Ambulance and New York State Police.

Southampton Town detectives are still investigating the Long Island direct car crash.

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, you could easily end up in an accident because of another driver.

Besides distraction, speeding and alcohol, cutting lanes, or driving in the wrong direction can lead to severe and fatal accidents.

If something like this happens to you, the first thing you need to do is seek medical help. Even if your injuries are minor, you should let the doctor check you. Some injuries develop a few days after the crash and without a medical record, the insurance company wouldn’t believe that you sustained them in the crash. They’d seek even the smallest mistake in your claim so they could reduce the offer or deny it entirely.
